Boiler losing pressure? What it means and what to do

A boiler pressure gauge creeping into the red is one of the most common reasons for a "no heating" call-out — and often the easiest to sort. Here's what's normal, what causes it to drop, and how to top it up safely.

Quick answer

Most boilers should sit between 1 and 1.5 bar when the heating is off and the system is cold — check your manual, as it varies slightly by model. Low pressure isn't dangerous, just inconvenient: if the gauge is below 1, you can usually top it up yourself using the filling loop in a couple of minutes. If it keeps dropping again within days or weeks, that's a sign of a leak somewhere and worth getting looked at rather than repeatedly topping up.

What "boiler pressure" actually means

Modern combi and system boilers run on a sealed loop of water that circulates between the boiler and your radiators. That loop needs to be kept at a specific pressure to push hot water around the system properly. Too low, and the boiler can't circulate water efficiently — most will lock out and refuse to fire until it's corrected, which is why a pressure drop often shows up as "no heating or hot water."

You'll find the pressure gauge on the front of the boiler, either a traditional dial or a digital readout. It's usually marked with a green zone (roughly 1–1.5 bar) and a red zone either side of it.

Pressure too high, not low?

This guide is about low pressure. If your gauge is pinned in the red zone on the high side instead, don't try to release it yourself — that's not a simple homeowner job, and doing it the wrong way can be genuinely dangerous. Get in touch with Ash instead.

What causes pressure to drop

  • You (or someone else) recently bled a radiator. Releasing trapped air also releases a small amount of water, which drops system pressure slightly — this is normal.
  • A slow leak somewhere in the system. Could be a radiator valve, a joint in the pipework, or the boiler itself. Often too small to see, but enough to lose pressure gradually over days or weeks.
  • The pressure relief valve is venting. If pressure gets too high, this valve releases water to bring it back down — sometimes it's slightly faulty and lets water out even at normal pressure.
  • Old age. Seals and components naturally wear over years of use, and small drips can develop that weren't there before.

It's fine to check around your radiators, valves and visible pipework yourself for damp patches or drips. Don't remove any panels or casing from the boiler itself to look for a leak inside it — that part's for a Gas Safe registered engineer.

How to top up the pressure yourself

If you're comfortable doing it, topping up pressure is a job most people can do without any tools. Most boilers use an external filling loop, but some use a concealed filling key behind a small panel instead — check your manual if you can't see a braided hose:

  1. Find the filling loop. It's a braided flexible hose, usually silver or grey, connected to two valves underneath or beside the boiler.
  2. Turn the boiler off and make sure both ends of the loop are attached securely.
  3. Open both valves slowly — you'll hear water flowing and see the gauge start to rise. Open them gently rather than all at once.
  4. Stop at 1–1.5 bar. It rises quickly, so keep an eye on the gauge and close the valves as soon as you're in the green zone.
  5. Close both valves fully and disconnect the loop if it's removable. Leaving it open is the most common mistake — it can let pressure keep climbing after you've walked away.
  6. Turn the boiler back on. It should fire up normally once it registers the correct pressure — some models need the reset button pressed too, so check the display.

When to stop and call an engineer instead

If you can't find the filling loop, the pressure won't hold after topping up, or you're topping it up more than once every few weeks, don't keep repeating it — that pattern almost always points to a leak that needs finding and fixing properly.

And if you can smell gas at any point, stop immediately and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 before doing anything else.

It's also worth glancing at the gauge every few weeks even when nothing seems wrong — catching a slow drop early is easier to deal with than discovering it's fully in the red on a cold morning.
